Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro

The Research Institute Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro - JBRJ - was founded on June 13, 1808.

It arose from a decision by the then Portuguese prince regent D. João to install a gunpowder factory and a garden for acclimatizing plant species from other parts of the world.
Today the Botanical Garden Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro is a federal agency under the Ministry of Environment and is one of the most important research centers in the world in the areas of botany and biodiversity conservation.

It is the oldest Botanical Garden in activity in Latin America and houses the largest herbarium in Latin America.

Besides, it is today one of the main tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is part of the of the 10% best attractions in the world according to Tripadvisor's Traveler's Choice and is a Unesco and National World Heritage Site by UNESCO and National Heritage Site by IPHAN.

Its 54 hectars of visitable area is home to 34 works of art and monuments, 5 archeological sites and 11 Historic Patrimonies, such as the house where the Visitor's Center is located, built in 1576.
