The University of Rio de Janeiro State (UERJ) was founded in 1950 as University of the Federal District, it was called that way due to the fact that Rio de Janeiro was capital of Brazil. The current name was received in 1975. Formed by the union of four faculties, UERJ opened its main campus in the Maracanã neighborhood in 1976. Today, the public college is one of the biggest universities of the state and one of the most important in Brazil.
