Blessed with a beautiful natural landscape formed by an immense green area, the mountain city of Petrópolis is located atop the Serra dos Órgãos range, and is rich in Atlantic rainforest flora and fauna. Its name means “City of Teresa”, in honor of Teresa Cristina, wife of D. Pedro II. The Imperial Family used to visit the region, attracted by its mountains and climate.
The city origins, however, are more recent – they date from the mid 19th-century. Starting in 1821, British-Portuguese George March acquired a large glebe and turned it into a model farm, thus kick-starting the development of the region’s agriculture and cattle-raising and the building of summer houses there.
Its tourist attractions include the Serra dos Órgãos National Park – which takes up 20 thousand hectares, The Três Picos State Park, with its large variety of animals and vegetation, the Iacy lake, and the Teresópolis Feirinha, a crafts street market that brings together the local artisans.
