Blessed with tranquility and natural beauty, the city of Iguaba Grande attracts tourists in search of peace and quiet at the shores of Araruama Lagoon. Known as the Lakes Region’s Little Princess, it offers beautiful locations and good services spread out over its 36 square kilometers.
Its beaches extend over around three kilometers along Amaral Peixoto highway, with clear sands and lots of seashells that delight visitors.
Another well-known tourism spot is the stretch called Praia da Ilhota (Islet Beach), located at the 98,5 km mark of the highway, which includes the Santa Rita de Cássia Island, where one can find a chapel, and Ponta da Farinha (Flour Tip), at Morro do Governo (Government Hill).
The small village sprouted in 1761 when the Imaculada Nossa Senhora da Conceição Chapel was erected by Jesuit priest Francisco Borges. In 1915 it became the starting point of the train route to Niterói for those coming from Cabo Frio by boat.
