Campos dos Goytacazes is the oldest municipality in the northern part of the state and its largest. It became a standout city in the 18thand 19th centuries thanks to its high sugar production and was home to a powerful agrarian aristocracy, from which it’s inherited an important material legacy.
The Liceu das Humanidades building is a highlight. It was erected in the 19th century. Originally, it was the home of Baron and Baroness of Lagoa Dourada (Golden Pond), a wealthy couple that was prominent in the city’s politics. It was opened in 1867 with a magnificent ball and was considered one of Campos’ most beautiful and majestic buildings. It was listed for heritage protection by the State Cultural Heritage Institute (INEPAC) in 1988.
Solar do Visconde de Araruama is another example. Built in the late 18th century, it was home to the City Council and to City Hall. Listed for heritage protection by the National Institute of Artistic and Historical Patrimony (IPHAN) in 1943 and by (INEPAC) in 1987, today it’s used by the Campos Historical Museum.
Solar dos Airizes, built in the 19th century and listed by IPHAN in 1940, and the city’s Forum, built in 1935 in neoclassical style for Campos’ centennial, are also important parts of the local heritage.
