About

Leaving from the Marina da Glória, one can take boat trips along Guanabara Bay and enjoy some of the best views of two cities in the state. On the Rio de Janeiro side, one can appreciate a privileged, unique angle of the Sugarloaf mountain and the Flamengo, Botafogo and Urca beaches, on the opposite site, in neighboring Niterói, there are the São Francisco, Icaraí, Flechas and Boa Viagem beaches. Once in Niterói, proper, visitors can see the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), the Santa Cruz Fortress, and the Fiscal, Moncaguê, Enxadas and Cobras islands. Between the two cities lies the Rio-Niterói bridge, that extends across the whole bay.

More About
  • There are 44 beaches formed by the Guanabara Bay in the State of Rio de Janeiro. In the city of Niterói are nine beaches, in São Gonçalo are five, and in Magé are four. Most of the beaches of the city of Rio de Janeiro are located in neighborhoods of the north zone of the city. The district of Ilha Governador has 11 beaches and Ilha de Paquetá, 12. Other neighborhoods bathed by the bay are: Ramos, Flamengo, Botafogo and Urca.
  • Several companies offer motorboat and sloop rides leaving from the Marina da Glória.
  • Flamengo beach extends along Aterro do Flamengo park.
  • Small and narrow, around 100 meters long, Urca beach sits at the foot of Urca hill.
  • Botafogo beach is located at the harbor that bears the same name, next to one of the cities most famous icons, the Sugarloaf.
  • Projected by Oscar Niemeyer, the Museum of Contemporary Art’s chalice-shaped concrete structure has become one of Niterói’s symbols.
  • The Rio-Niterói bridge is 13 km long, eight of which over the water. If was first opened in 1974, after five years of construction.
  • The Santa Cruz Fortress is located in Jurujuba, a municipality of Niterói. Situated across the São João Fortress, in Urca, it formed Rio de Janeiro’s defensive structure during colonial and Imperial times.
  • Fiscal Island sits in the middle of Guanabara Bay and made history for being the location of the famous ball that would become the Empire’s last big party before the Proclamation of the Republic, in November 1889. Currently it is home to a historical-cultural museum maintained by the Navy.
