Formerly the site of the Brasil Industrial textile mill, the Knowledge Factory is a large compound shared by several cultural entities – the Municipal Culture and Environment Secretariats, the Villa-Lobos Music School and the Municipal Ballet Company are some of them.
The stately main building is four thousand meters high, follows British architecture and has been landmarked by the for heritage protection by the State Cultural Patrimony Institute (INEPAC) since 1985.
Opened in 1871, the mill shut down in 1984. It was bought by City Hall in 2001 and turned into the Knowledge Factory, also referred to by locals as the Municipal University.
