The Copacabana Fortress first opened in 1914, after six years of construction. Originally built to protect the city’s coast, in 1987 the fortress turned its focus to culture. Among its attractions there are some artillery pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries, which are displayed outdoors; the Museu Histórico do Exército, a museum which shows military artifacts from colonial, imperial and republican times; a library; and a café. There is also an auditorium, a showroom for temporary exhibitions, and a souvenir shop.

  • It occupies a total area of 114.169 square meters;

  • It was named a national heritage building in 1990 by Inepac (Instituto Estadual de Patrimônio Cultural);
  • The final episode of 'Pega Pega', a TV Globo Soap Opera, was shot there.
