The setting of important events in Brazilian history, the edifice that is now home to Casa França-Brasil has been used for a variety of cultural activities since 1990.
Erected in the 19th century, it was one of the first buildings to be protected as a Historical Patrimony, in 1938. Recently, it underwent structural and restoration work. Today, Casa França-Brasil offers a 700 square meters large exhibition hall, as well as two other smaller rooms which can be adapted according to different artistic activities.
The property also includes a courtyard with plants, stone-made benches, tables and artificial lighting. From there, one can appreciate the view of the traditional Our Lady of Candelária church.

More About
  • Construction on the building started in 1819. It was originally created to be used by the city´s first commercial trade center;
  • The building’s project was assigned by D. João VI to Grandjean de Montigny, who was part of the French Arts Mission;
  • The property was the site of a 1821 demonstration for a more liberal constitution. The demonstration was disrupted when royal troops invaded the building;
  • In 1824, after Brazil became independent from Portugal, the building underwent modifications in order to be used by the Customs authority. Remodeling for that very purpose started in 1852, under the supervision of André Rebouças, from a project by Portuguese architect Rapahel de Castro;
  • From 1956 to 1978, the building was used as the law-court.
