Niterói’s main urban public park, Campo de São Bento occupies an area of 36 thousand square feet with flowerbeds, a man-made lake, a playground for children, a small amusement park and, on weekends, a big arts and crafts fair. Its landscaping was inspired by British romanticism. Its gazebo, with embossed columns, railings and top, has been listed for heritage protection by the State Cultural Heritage Institute (INEPAC) in 1985 for being a landmark of the romantic period that was in vogue from the late 19th century through the 20th.
Campo de São Bento is Niterói’s oldest designed green área. It was listed in 1991 by Niterói’s City Hall for heritage projection. The property belongs to the São Bento Monastery since 1697 and the park was urbanized in 1908, following a project from Belgian landscaper Arséne Puttemans.
