Located between the Benfica and São Cristóvão districts, Cadeg is basically an enormous four story-high cluster of stalls and warehouses representing about 700 different businesses. There one can buy a variety of domestic and imported goods, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, flowers, decoration and shipping supplies.
According to Sebrae (Support Service to Micro and Small Companies) figures, about eight people work there, servicing 28 thousand costumers per week, on average.
Erected in 1962, it is Rio’s largest commercial center, and the to-go place for the city’s restauraters. There they can find spices and ingredients used in Italian, Portuguese and Arabic cuisines.
Recently, Cadeg underwent a sort of renaissance, attracting more vendors and more visitors in search of reasonably priced goods and restaurants.
