Known worlwide since French actress Brigitte Bardot made a visit at the height of her fame and beauty in the Sixties, Armação dos Búzios, or just Búzios, is located next to Cabo Frio – from which it seceded to become an independent municipality – in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro.
It’s an eigh-kilometer long peninsula, with 23 different beaches. On one side, it is bathed by currents coming from Equador; on the other side, by currents coming from the South Pole. This combination accounts for beaches with warm water and others with very cold water. Some of the most popular ones are Geribá, Ferradurinha, João Fernandes, Manguinhos, Tartaruga, Ossos, Tucuns, Brava and Olho-de-Boi (a nude beach).
The impact of Brigitte Bardot’s visit, in 1964, has been such that to this day one can find references to the actress there. For example, there is a statue in her honor, as well as a movie theater named after her. Once it became world famous, the old fishing village turned into a hot spot for international tourists, specially from Argentina, and was once referred to as the Brazilian Saint Tropez.
