Located just a little over 100 kilometers from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Araruama is a quiet place with natural beauty and a welcoming people. It offers 13 beautiful beaches with calm waters, cool breezes and good infrastructure for visitors, who may chose between those beaches formed by the Lagoa de Araruama lagoon and the ocean beaches, such as Massambaba and Praia Seca.
The Araruama municipality was first settled by natives of the Tupinambá tribe, horticulturalists and potters of Amazonian origin, who had a strong presence in the region during pre-colonial times. Part of this history is displayed in panels at the local Museu de Arqueologia, situated in the main house of the old Aurora farm, a beautiful 1862 neoclassical edifice that has been listed by the State Cultural Heritage Institute (Inepac).
